F.A.Q.

What is a food supplement?

Food supplement is also known as dietary or nutritional supplement and is a preparation intended to provide nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, fiber, fatty acids or amino acids, that are missing or are not consumed in sufficient quantity in someone’s diet. Usually it takes form of a shake or a pill.

I’m using Ushakes and I don’t feel good!

1 Ushakes meal gives you 30 % of all daily needed nutritions. Check that you don’t consume any other vitamin supplements, such as vitamin pills, because the surplus of some vitamins can cause some health problems. If it’s not that you should check the ingredients of Ushakes, maybe you have some alergic reaction to one of them.

What is Genetically Modified Food?

GMF is food derived from Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO). Genetically modified plants have genes artificially transfered from other species or between organisms that could be conventionally bred. There are two different types of genetically engineered organisms: transgenic (organisms which have inserted DNA or a gene from other species into the host genome) and cisgenic (contains gene which have been isolated directly from the host species or from sexually compatible species). Transgenic plants have been engineered to possess resistance to pests, herbicides or harsh environmental conditions, to produce insecticides and to increase nutritional value. Those plants benefit customer with nutritional enhancement, taste, texture etc. There are many controversies about safety of such food. One is that available data do not prove that GM food doesn’t pose risks to health. Another is the effect pest and herbicide-resistant crops have on ecosystems by reducing the numbers of pest insects that impact on biodiversity. The risk and effects of gene transfer may also causes genes to spread from modified crops to wild relatives.

What is Genetically Modified Organisms?

GMO is an organism whose genetic material has been transformed by genetic engineering techniques which use DNA molecules from different sources and combine them into one molecule to create a new set of genes. This DNA is transferred into an organism and gives it modified or new genes. This is done either by attaching genes to a virus or physically inserting DNA into the nucleus of the of the intended host with a very small syringe or with very small particles fired from a gene gun. There are some other methods which exploit natural forms of gene transfer, such as the ability of Agrobacterium to transfer genetic material to plants and the ability of Lentiviruses to transfer genes to animal sells. The safety of GMOs in the food is questioned because they could introduce new allergens into food or contribute to the spread of antibiotic resistance. Simply they are unnatural and therefore unsafe.

What is Food Irradiation?

Food irradiation is the process where the food is exposed to ionizing radiation which destroys different microorganisms, viruses, bacteria or insects that might be present in the food. Further applications contain sprout inhibition, ripening delay, increase of juice yield and improves hydration. The actual effect is damaging DNA (the basic genetic information for life) so that microorganisms can’t proliferate and continue their activities, so that insects don’t survive or become incapable of proliferation, so that fruit and vegetable can’t continue it’s natural ripening. The concerns are that this process has the same effect on vitamins and minerals which means it reduces the amount of nutrients in such processed food. Food irradiated food is dead food because by killing the microorganisms it kills also 5 – 80 % of vitamins and live enzymes which are crucial to the body because they help to decompose food to even get to vitamins. Another thing is that during food irradiation free radicals start to formate and they are damaging cells in our body if we don’t get enough antioxidants to negate them. But we can only get antioxidants from raw non-irradiated food.
